Re: What Do I Need To Screen Print At Home?
Hi John.
Mike here from Ireland.
I have just started researching screen printing out of personal interest with a view to setting up a small business in the future. I currently run a music school
http://www.TheMusicWorkshop.ie and I would like to use a room in the school to try screen printing. I have found a 'Start Up Kit' available in Ireland for around 100 dollars. Now I realize this will be a very basic kit but Id like you to look at it and see if its a waste of money or a good starting point. As I said its just out of interest at the moment but I would still like to have the chance at a good quality final product.

Thanks in advance for all your help

Re: What Do I Need To Screen Print At Home?
Hello Mike, thanks for posting on the Catspit forum
It looks like the kit you are looking at is a very basic home printer’s kit. It seems to have drawing fluid or Mod Podge as it were. That means you have to “paint” the stencil with a brush. In all my videos we use a photographic method of creating the stencil so unless you are awesome with a brush the results vary.
It also seems to have pigments and bases to screen print with. One looks like a textile and the other looks like it might be a poster medium for paper. I think a better grade textile ink even if it is water based would be better. You may have mixing issues or washing issues with a medium and pigment based system of inks.
It really depends on your end goals whether this kit is for you or not. I always recommend spending as much as you can when you buy equipment if you are serious about printing any quantity of tee shirts on a commercial basis.

Re: What Do I Need To Screen Print At Home?
Hey John. Thanks so much for a quick reply. It looks like that would be money wasted even though its only 100 dollars. Ive continued my research and it seems for a quality set up I'm looking at 900 to 1100 dollars . This is an amount I would be willing to invest with what I can see is a huge gap in the market here in ireland. I'll post again with links to this new set up I refered to earlier in the post. Thanks again for your time and patience .
All the best
Mike

No problem Mike. I think I would have to agree with your assessment for commercial purposes anyway.
$900 to $1000 sounds right for a decent kit.
It’s my pleasure to help out anytime. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Re: What Do I Need To Screen Print At Home?
one piece of advice from us is that you must make sure to stay focused and keep your eyes on the goal! we started in our garage and it was often difficult to wake up in the mornings to only go into your garage to start printing. We did that for 2 years and it got extremely boring at times.
So, in addition to get all the equipment, make sure you set yourself in the proper state of mind and remind yourself that "no pain no gain"!!
