Creating 1 Color Halftone Artwork With Spot Colors

Post by Catspit Productions »

This is another very awesome educational video by Catspit Productions. This one is a long awaited and a much demanded topic about creating 1 color halftones in Illustrator. In this tutorial screenprinting video Jonathan will show you how he sets up his black and white halftones with spot colors using an image modified in Photoshop which is imported into Illustrator. Here he will explain a few things about doing this before he shows you what to do in the graphic software in order to get a halftone film positive. For this you’ll need a computer, vector art software, RIP software, an inkjet printer and inkjet film positives. Then you’ll need a photograph that you can manipulate in an image program like Photoshop or Gimp. Jonathan will show you the rest and no matter what software you use his teaching style will enable you to do this for yourself with a little hard work. This is another very fun run through of halftone screen printing with black inks on a white tee shirt. One more thing, you’ll also get a peek into how to print the same design on black tee shirts. Who loves you baby?

It is a good video.

I thought that the video would be on how to make the halftone without the need for a Rip Software.

I'll have to invest in one. ;)

I'm going to add it to my ever increasing "I need todo this one day" list, but I'd love to work up a video showing how I do one color halftones using GIMP and no RIP.

Yeah that would be something to see. I don't know how to do halftones without RIP, at least not high quality ones with true spot colors and true rounded dot halftones. But many people make halftones in many different ways. I can only show you what I know how to do since I couldn't possibly know all about every method out there.

Do it up to the Max Andy ;)

I'm sure that would help a lot of people who don't have Illustrator or RIP. I think you could post it right here to make this post thorough.

If one wanted to create a black image with a gray border and gray images, is it possible to create it all as a one color black job with any gray being a 50% screen of the black eliminating the need for a second ink color and treat it like a halftone? Thats the way we would do it if making a printing plate in the offset world. Thanks in advance. Peace

Perhaps. It may depend on the artwork.
