Screen Printing Experiment: Using Yellow And Red Inkjet Film Positives

In this experimental educational screenprinting video we discuss a concept initially used with rubylith and amberlith. If you recall this manual masking process you remember it is cut by hand and weeded out much like heat transfer vinyl. But it could be used for screen printing in 2 ways. First it can be applied directly to the screen as a physical stencil. However it may also be used as film positives. These products are not fully opaque and yet they can expose film. Why is that? Why are red and yellow safe lights usable for darkrooms in screen printing? Furthermore why are we continuing to physically block UV light from exposing screens? This is a fun experimental video in which I use red and yellow inkjet ink film positives to expose some test screens. The results are very interesting and it makes me think more about how and why the concept of rubylith and amberlith was left behind. It’s that thought and my knowledge of photographic filtering of light that led me to make this video. I hope you enjoy this eye opening tutorial. Jon,
I'm very new to this field picking up equipment this week end, but have sold and been to shops that screen print in my previous life. This is insanely cool from a science and physics perspective. Still mentally difficult to accept that something that isn't opaque works what looks to be just as well as an opaque black positive.
