Emulsion Washing out with Design

Here you can discuss issues related to exposing screens for screen printing. This includes determining the exposure, light sources and washing out the stencil in the washout booth. Emulsion issues may also be addressed here.

Emulsion Washing out with Design

Post by zackhilliard »

Hey, I left a comment on youtube a while back saying how my emulsion is now washing out with the rest of my design. So basically I am an amateur screenprinter and i have been doing this for almost two years now. Recently, however, when I go to wash out my screens the exposed emulsion begins to wash out with the unexposed emulsion that comprises the design. https://www.flickr.com/photos/117222054 ... 468211084/. (sorry I do not know how to attach the pictures here)
I have no idea what is wrong, and I know that it isn't tooo much pressure from the water because its from a sink attachment. I would very much appreciate any help or advice that anyone could give. Thanks!

My first thought is the screen is underexposed. Try doubling your exposure as a starting point. If you have a exposure calculator use it. If not get one. typically they are under 20.00.

I agree with Saati. It looks like it started rinsing out like unexposed emulsion.

Did I answer your comment on YouTube? I know the G+ transition has made it impossible to reply to many older and sometimes random comments.

I don't use a pressure washer to rinse of designs, just normal garden hose pressure with attachment. What steps are you using to expose your designs? There are many reasons why it will wash out but most common is probably under exposing. It could be that the transparency isn't tight enough to the screen or on the wrong side, emulsion could be bad, many different reasons. More info is needed to help but we will help in any way we can.
