What's going on here?

Here you can discuss issues related to exposing screens for screen printing. This includes determining the exposure, light sources and washing out the stencil in the washout booth. Emulsion issues may also be addressed here.

What's going on here?

Post by ApeShirt »

I keep having a problem with these screens. The white is on a 155 at 35lpi. I'm losing a lot of dots when I washout and the far edge of the cross keeps doing this. I've done 3 screens and it keeps doing the same thing the other 3 edges are fine. With the red I'm running a 305 mesh and a lot of the halftones won't develop. Here's a pic of a shirt so I could show it better and a pic of the artwork to show what it's supposed to look like.

That is very interesting. What a strange phenomenon. I could only guess at this, not being there and since the other sides of the cross develop well.

- The film positive is defective somehow.
- The exposure light source is uneven.
- The screenprinting Gods are against you. You must perform a tee shirt sacrifice ;)

I would also suggest putting some fill color in the text.

Yeah, I already sacrificed a tee. Maybe it's time for dance and chanting though. I don't get it at all. My gradients aren't even developing right.
Oh, they wanted just the outline text.

Well if it happened 3 times and it is consistant on all 3 then that is a good thing (it is repeatable results) and you are consistant in your practices.

Now... what happened. I wold sacrafice one more screen by rotating the positive so that the image is rotated 180 from the last exposure position to determine if the positive is too light on that side. If the same exact thing happens then it is a positve issue if it now flips to the other side of the image then we need to look at hot sposts caused by the lamp or screen to positve contact .

I didn’t think about film to screen contact. If your “sandwich” isn’t tight then you can have exposure issues.

I think Saati has a great suggestion here Greg. That will definitely help you eliminate possible causes and get to the answer for this mystery.

Thanks a lot Saati! You guys always have such excellent technical information.

Weird. It was apparently a positive issue. I made another transparency and problem solved. That was a first for me.
