Washing out screens with half tones

Here you can discuss issues related to exposing screens for screen printing. This includes determining the exposure, light sources and washing out the stencil in the washout booth. Emulsion issues may also be addressed here.

Washing out screens with half tones

Post by christielg »

Hi Guys,
I am in need of some help here, Please!!!!
Here goes, I have spent hours today trying to burn and washout screens, some r just 110 mesh for underbase and some are 305 mesh with half tones. I have never had this problem before with my 110 screens. I use the ulano EZ film emulsion. 30 & 50. Today I was going to try to do a cmyk design, but I can't even get a darn screen burned and washed out. This is what is happening: Burn as usual go to washout booth use very soft water pressure and when the emulsion started to come off it looks slimy. No resolved like usual. I have messed up so much emulsion. Can somebody please tell me what the problem is?
Thanks,
Christie

If it's completely washing out, it sounds like underexposure. But from the sounds of things, you've successfully burned several screens with the EZ-films before, so I'm assuming you've got your exposure times dialed-in. Has anything changed with your exposure setup that could be causing less UV to hit the films on the screen? Also, how old are your films? Looking at the Ulano site, it seems they have an 18 month shelf life (assuming dry, ideal conditions) and 4 weeks once applied to a screen. If they're a year old or more, they may be going bad.
