Questions from post

Post by whiteyg »

Jon, I wanted to ask a question about a topic that was discussed in a post but the question would be off topic for that section of the forum. :?

So here is what I wanted, you tell me how I can get a response if this comes up again?

ppdlao posted about "thickness ink printing" and in that post he mentioned he mixed the yellow and red ink to obtain his orange, but not just any orange
he came up with "Harley Orange". My question is does ppdlao have the percents of the two colors he used to obtain the "harley orange" and how close was he?

I watched his video of the printing of his shirts, nice job ppdlao on the shirt and the video if you are reading this post.

Can members of the forum contact one another through the forum? I noticed when I viewed my profile my email was not available, is this turned off by default?

Thanks

I think most people's email addresses are hidden by default, but if you look to the right of this post where my Screen name is, you'll see a little icon that says "PM". If you click on that icon below a person's name, you can send them a private message which will usually notify them via email ;)

I’m not sure. I would think you should be able to send a Private Message to another forum member but there could be restrictions based on the amount of posts you have. When you first register you’re a “Newly Registered User.” As you post and use the forum it changes to “Registered User” which you are at this time.

It’s possible that Newly Registered Users have restrictions on contacting other members but since this does not apply to you it would seem that you should be able to.

Click the member’s name you want to contact. Check out this snapshot of my monitor when I click your name. This is what you will see once you have spent some time on the forum posting. I’m new to this whole forum thing so I apologize I don’t know everything about my own forum... LOL :(

But I am learning. I think that’s the issue. After some posting you should be able to message other members. The internals of the forum are very complicated and it takes me hours to find things in order to control the permissions and such. I’ll see if I can “activate your ability to contact other members but it may take me a few days.

Once that is done by me or by you posting, because I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to do it, you’ll also see what Shamax is saying too. I tested your permissions and it is true you cannot contact other members at this time.

I think it is what I explained above. I’ll look into it.

Hi Larry! sorry I´m having constructions work at home and it's all messed up!! dusty, and noisy! :x I haven´t had time for me, but yeah I did that orange with simple Yellow and Scarlet Red from Routland Inks, I got a very "red" orange, I didn´t know then that I had to add a little of white to that mixing, I could done it better, well I guest is part of the mixing learning experience :geek: , and well I´ve answered your PM there you go the formula for a Harley Davidson "orange" which I found in Google that a lot of people agree it's Pantone 165C, and I got this formula from Routland team for 1 kg of Pantone 165C I´ll share it for you all:

Pantone 165C(Harley davidson orange)

Yellow (61%) 606.70 grs
White (17%) 171.00 grs
Fluor Red (16%) 165.00 grs
Scarlet Red (6%) 57.30 grs

NOTE: I´m pretty shure guys, you can omit the Fluor Red, adding the two reds as one, like this:

Yellow (61%) 606.70 grs
White (17%) 171.00 grs
Scarlet Red (22%) 222.30 grs

See you guys! I hope this could help you Larry
see you Jon!

by the way my name is Pepe

Hi guys, I've seen a lot of Harley apparel and noticed slight variations in that "Orange", some are a bright and some are a bit darker. The only color matching experience that I can describe, or compare to, would be the mixing of PMS colors with offset inks. Early in my printing career, the only color matching I did was using the "Dab,Glob,Spec" method and then a "tap" test on the type of paper, you were about to print on. Later years resulted in more accurate color matching through the use of a PMS mixing guide and a set of triple beam scales. Those inks were transparent based and you could not match the color by eye or looking at the ink in mass. There was an Orange 021 that was almost 165 orange. The mixing colors that we used were just that, and only for the purpose of mixing a PMS color. For example, you could use Process Yellow to mix a formula calling for Pantone Yellow, and the result would be close but not as close as if you had used the Pantone Yellow. Our formula for PMS 165 in the offset trade, calls for 50%Pantone yellow and 50% Pantone Warm Red which is one of our base mixing colors. The formula, when mixed and measured properly, will render a perfect PMS 165 on white paper. Looking at the ScreenPrint ink formula for 165 above, I noticed that you mentioned the ink manufacturer which prompted a couple of questions. Realizing that most ink manufacturers use different sources for their pigments, does a color with a name such as "Scarlet Red" vary depending on the manufacturer or is Scarlet Red one of the base standard "mixing" colors? Is there a Pantone formula guide for Screen Printing inks that I need to be aware of or is the "Dab,Glob,Spec" method used primarily? Thanks in advance....peace

Screen printing ink colors will vary from brand to brand. The names like Bright Red, Scarlet Red, Royal Blue, Kelly Green, Forest Green and so on will be similar but most likely not exactly the same when you move from one brand to another. Most ink mixing in smaller shops is done by eye. Larger shops will have ink mixing systems which again can vary by manufacturers. These may be volume based for mixing. Each brand will sell you their own base colors with their own software.

The only standard mixing guide would be the non coated PMS system which most of the biggest shops will use. I suggest working straight from the bucket as a smaller shop. Ink mixing can be very expensive if you don’t know what you are doing and wasted ink or excessive ink is common.

There is no reason why a customer can’t pick a color from a swatch book for standard colors you can buy or may have in stock. When you run into a job where color is going to be an issue like this be wary. If the customer is so specific in the color match there is a good chance they may reject the final printed product. A press proof is mandatory to protect yourself.

I avoid jobs like that because ink mixing adds labor time and clean up time to the job as well. But honestly it isn’t difficult to sell out of the bucket. And I have a stock orange that would be perfect for the Harley color. No need to mix anything.
