Gene Simmons!

Post by ppdlao »

 Hi guys! I´m practically a screen printing newbie, I´ve just started printing past May, but I´ve been working on CorelDraw like 6 years ago just for hobby, and Photoshop like a year ago, that little experience on art software has allowed me to make a difference between the screen printing job I could achieve, among other local printers, despite my short experience and my poor quality equipment  . Art work skills are vital to highlight over the competition.

Everything I know I´ve learnt it from web tutorials, youtube, forums, etc . :!: Jon(CATSPIT) is right, when he says the more you get deep into your screen printing job, the easier it would get to understand how a special technique is done, so I enjoy looking and searching for new experimental art work, I also enjoy looking t shirts on the mall, it gives me more idea how professional screen printing jobs are done.

So I want to share with you a one color halftone image I´ve screen printed just for my self, since KISS is my favourite Rock Band ever, jejeje, the film positive was made from the higher size image I found in GOOGLE, with Photoshop, some tricky images adjustments and then FILTER->PIXELATE->COLOR HALFTONE, doing some testing, based on my eyes over the monitor image, zooming in and out until I tought I had the best image I hope you appreciate it ;) , take a look: http://youtu.be/-ZdLlHuKBY8

Gene Simmons! The Film Positive process NO RIP required

Post by ppdlao »

 Hi again guys, well I´m leaving some pics about the making of the Gene Simmons Face film positive in Ps:

At this point I have the halftone image done in order to print the film positve, which I printed on Prismacolor Tracing paper(I thinks that´s how you call it there in the US, here in México we call this "Papel Albanene") 11" x 17" size in some Ink Jet printer business, I don´t have any printer yet at home :|

 https://twitter.com/i/#!/PERAdesigns/me ... 2FVYfswfjn
You can see a several numbers of layers, I can´t really explain exactly how I achieve to do this, but, maybe I will show how in the future the "technique"(if it can be called so) that I´ve used for this, and it´s pretty much the same "tecnique" I use for "Halftoning" any image, but the image adjustments changes everytime depending on the image size and definition, it will always depend on your eyes at the very end 8-) .

Once I had the image I experiment with several colors that it can be printed, I think Red could have a cool look too, but I´ve decided on white, since it is one color design, I think it was the best option for it.

Since I don´t have the experience to do a formal turorial in the next days, I can share this Gene Simmons Film Positive for :!: CATSPIT Forum just for fun! All you have to do is email me: peradesigns@live.com.mx or via Facebook PM: https://www.facebook.com/PERA.designs ask for it and I´ll sent the .JPG back to you, the only requirment is you promise tou share pics of how you printed it on anything here in the forum!

You´re welcome buddy, It´s always my pleasure to contribute with your forum somehow. Yeah the positive it´s pretty cool! very detailed, the Video shows only one stroke (I quit flooding, because I was "loosing" a lot of details when printing) but I did 2 strokes+flashing and then a final light stroke (I don´t record all the flashing, because as you know I do it with a heatgun and it would be like a 3 mins video or even a more length video!) take a look at the final t shirt
 https://twitter.com/i/#!/PERAdesigns/me ... 2FzNj5VBJ3
It looks pretty cool for a "simple" photoshop effect, instead of a RIP software, it´s just one screen, one color, the truth is that I was very dobtful about the final printing during the positive creating process, but I had a nice printing at the end.

I´ve started experimenting because I don´t have the $ to buy any RIP software neither a inkjet printer neither the film paper, so I was watching the new Spiderman movie, when "peter" was traveling on the subway after he was bitten bye the "infected" spider, so take a look whenever you can, he is wearing a black t shirt with a famous Albert Einstein pic sticking his tongue out! jajaja I loved it, and tought will I have to wait until I could afford a expenssive software to achieve that kind of work? so I´ve tried and tried like 2 full days on my 532Mb RAM PC until I succesfully achieved this image, this positive :geek: (I know, my equipment is very raw but I´m just starting this adventure  )

Other reason for me to atemptting this kind of halftone effect with the bare Photoshop program, is that the last time I managed to do a very cool "worn" effect over the classic batman logo, but my positive printer trahsed it, he always ask me to deliver him my art in an image or vector but as a Corel Draw file, so I did all my effects on photoshop, and at the end exported the file as a .JPG and "opened" it in Corel and saved at it as a .CDR file and sent it to him, and what Corel does for default whenever you "upload" an image on it, is to automatically darkens it, so it(the batman worn effect positive) lost a lot of the details, so I did´t print what I was expecting of, and with the Gene Simmons positive, I´ve got what I really wanted, I sent the .JPG file into a .CDR file as always but the image(the positive) was already "halftoned", I think my printer doesn´t know how to get the best from his RIP software neither. He prints films, not from a laser o inkjet, but really films positives, the ones made over chemicals solutions or whatever, they are very expensive, like $4 dlls each 11"x14" positive, so I can´t leave it to chance when it comes to my film positives.

this is the batman logo effect I was expecting
 https://twitter.com/i/#!/PERAdesigns/me ... 2FK5UvwHUK
 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater It was a very light worn effect

and this is what I´ve got  http://youtu.be/ZHlXxO5khFg It´s pretty cool too but it wasn´t nearly close to what all the detailed effect I wanted.

I think this raw technique I´ve used to create the Gene Simmons positive could and will be a very helpful art tool for now.

I hope you guys like this ;)

I din´t mention that when I did the Batman worn effect positive I didn´t know yet how to use the FILTER->PIXELATE->COLOR HALFTONE thing, so the image of the BAtman worn effect logo positive that I sent to my printer wasn´t "halftoned" I left that to my printer since he uses a RIP software(don´t ask me which I don´t have such that confindence with him) when printing my film positives, but I´ve realized after that "batman" case that he doesn´t take all he can out of his art tools, because I think he should be able to print my films positives right away from a .PSD file, but obviously he can´t

Hey Pepe! Killer post. Thanks a lot for sharing your print job with us all. Photoshop looks like it can produce some decent halftones. What version do you have?

Hi Jon, yeah, I mean it´s not a RIP sofware, but it can bring a lot into it, I use a Ps CS4 version(but I´m pretty sure this could be done in any earlier or later version to PS CS4) I even had tried with some images, and this whole halftoning process seemed to me like didn´t work the best, sometimes I couldn´t make it, but generally It should get the work done.

There´s a couple of things you have to achieve a nice halftoned image, just give me this days, I´ll do like a short tutorial with an image for the next weekend, I´ll upload photos of the process to give a better understanding of this ;) You´ll see.

See you buddy!

Okay cool CS4 because I have heard later versions don't have the halftone function like that anymore.

More about halftones sounds good, thanks a lot for sharing.

We'll await your added posts. Thanks! :D
