I was pretty busy this week but I managed to make a quick video for you covering a topic we have been discussing of late and one that was requested by a recent caller to the storefront. I hope you find this brief video useful and informative.
This educational video is about the differences between dye based and pigment based inkjet inks. Why do we use pigment based inks? Why do we use dye based inks? Which one works best with water proof film positives? All of these questions and more are answered in this brief summary video about inkjet inks for making film positives. In the industry you may hear that dye based inks are best for making water proof film positives. Technically this may be the case but what does that mean for you if you have a printer with pigment based inks and you don’t want to change out he inks? This is a follow up video to the now popular video about how to make the best spot color film positive. If you have not seen that video we suggest you watch it now and then proceed to continue to watch this video.
How To Create The Best Spot Color Film Positives:

If you watch both of these videos you will be in a better position to make a decision about whether or not to buy an all-black ink system of any kind and if you really need dye based inkjet inks to make a decent film positive. The valuable answers are held within these 2 videos. Enjoy!

Re: Dye & Pigment Inkjet Inks For Films
Regarding the all black dye system, what if I use the inkjet pigment system with all black cartridges Instead of the all black dye system ?
Will it work ?
I'm using actually an HP9800 with the based ink (I believe it's pigment base) and the thing is, the ink doesn't seem to dry at all or it is more or less fragile
and if the weather is very humid, which happens often in the summer, there is a serious loss of density on the film after an exposure cycle which would force me to reprint the film on a repeat order.
Does this happens with the Epson 1430 with and pigment ink ?
Thanks for answering.
I truly appreciate all the tips I found on your site and in your videos. Always very helpful.

Re: Dye & Pigment Inkjet Inks For Films
I have never experienced anything like that with the Epson 1400 or the 1430. I don't think I even have heard of anyone with a similar problem. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking about the diet inks verse the pigment inks and using either one. If you could be more specific on that I might be able to answer your question. The problem may also lie in the waterproof inkjet film positives you are using. If they are not of good quality they may not receive all the ink that is being printed and drying could be a problem.
It sounds like there may be some substandard ink in the machine at the moment because if the UV light from the exposure unit is fading it, then the ink is not stable. If you're using the original Epson products, I would call them for technical troubleshooting. If you have changed all the inks out to some other ink, then I would call the people you bought the ink from for technical troubleshooting.
The Epson 1414 30 both have pigment inks in them from the factory. Dye inks will work in them as well.
It's my pleasure to help out where I can. I'm glad you found my videos and websites to be resourceful and informational. You're very welcome.
let me know if I can be of further assistance.
