creating a long screen for printing

This is the place to talk about what it takes to get started. This would include what equipment to buy, space requirements, electrical needs and anything related to getting ready to begin screen printing. Have a question regarding what it takes to screen print tee shirts? Please post them here...

creating a long screen for printing

Post by trueindigo »

Hello People,

I am trying to create a screen print that runs down the length of a pair of long pants, but almost all the information on the internet is for t-shirts and tops and such.

Is it possible to create a print that is about 3 inches wide and runs the length of a pair of pants along the outer seam? I can't find any resources anywhere that address how to do this long, thin band on a pair of pants.

Thanks for your help. Any resources/products to permit this would be very much appreciated.

Yes. There are specially made platens for this. Check here and be sure to enter the Catspit code for a discount ;) http://www.screenprintingsupplies.com/S ... 7003134375

thanks for the reply, but it looks like the longest is 24". i need to create a print that runs from the front pocket to the bottom hem, about 3-3.5 feet. are platens available for such long prints? also, i'm assuming a custom print frame as well. thanks, can you answer these questions as well? true.

Yes! Thanks Apeshirt ;)

Yes, I think for what you wish to do you will need to make a custom screen and pallet. It isn’t that difficult but the length of the print probably would make this ideal for table top printing. If you’re able to lay the garment flat and print on it without putting it on a pallet that may be good.

Otherwise you’ll have to figure out how to rig up a large screen and printing pallet to slide the leg onto so you can spray tack it down and do it right really. Something like this might be done before the pants are assembles on a graphic press due to the length.

But I’m sure you can rig it up. Some carpentry skills would help out.

Interesting topic, I´ve always wondered about larger or wider printings! I can figure out about the pallet, but what concerns me is the screen! back there in the US when you need a custom screen, do you order it to your vendor, or do you have to buy everything for separate and build it your self Jon?

Thnks in adavance for any response, interesting topic True Indigo, let us know if you manage to achieve that printing and how! ;)

Well you can easily make a custom screen from wood. There are a lot of people who can fabricate metal at home so I assume here in the Sates people could make metal or wooden screens very easily. All the materials are readily available and stretching devices or home brew methods are also available.

And there are certain larger size screens you can order form screen makers and print supply vendors. So in the end here in the US it should be very easy to use an “oversized” or custom screen.
