Tip for removing Vinyl Heat pressed onto garment

If you want to remove pressed vinyl I've had luck using a textile ink spot remover (Niagra brand)

You don't have to vaporize the vinyl, mainly get it wet, then take a green Scotchbrite pad and lightly scrape the vinyl it. When you have the garment saturated the vinyl will begin to buuble and lift.

After the vinyl is removed, there is a bit of adhesive left, give it another pass, wipe that off with a t-shirt, then heat press the blank garment. It leaves no mark (provided you didn't go berserk with the spot gun, or scotchbrite!) This has worked for me on t-shirts, hoodies and even polyester shirts.

Be careful you don't get areas of the shirt wet that you want to keep the vinyl on: if it saturates, the vinyl will eventually bubble up and lift.

That is awesome! Thanks for the tip. I think someone just asked me about this and I didn’t think it was possible. This will certainly help others out. How is the shirt after transfer removal? Is the fabric still in good condition and smooth?

Glad to help!

The first time I did it, was a hoodie that had been washed. I put a name and number on crooked. During the removal process I used less chemical and more scrubbing. The key was heat pressing it before I laid down the new vinyl. After it was done, you couldn't tell it had any issues. But I also put the replacement in the same location, which would actually cover any imperfections to a point.

This past weekend, we did gold vinyl on some American Apparel hoodies and Next Level t-shirts. These were brand new. One hoodie the art was placed too high, so we completely removed it and put it in the right spot. You couldn't tell there was ever any vinyl in the old spot.

What I started doing now is getting enough spot cleaner on it to loosen the vinyl, then peel it up. Then I'll wet it some more, take a clean rag and wipe it away, then press it, then apply vinyl. I didn't use as much of the scotchbrite as the first time, used more chemical.

One shirt we did, we had to change a number 7 to a 1. The rest of the print was ok. It was a challenge, but we used just enough to get the number off without disturbing the other numbers. And in that case, if we get the other numbers wet, I would immediately heat press to remove any of the chemical so it can't start lifting in spots we don't want it to.

That is amazing! You have created a whole new process that probably could help many who experience the same problems with mis-transfers. I bet this happens every day to people and they search for a solution online. But I have never seen a post about vinyl transfer removal before. I hope now they can find this thread and maybe you can help them out. ;)

Thanks a lot for sharing! Great post.

A good solution to remove vinyl from a garment is to use the point of a steam iron, this also brings all or most of the glue off.

cheers for the video tuts and forum catspit I will be rumaging around hopefully picking tips and learning the screenprinting stuff
