Net Neutrality: Accessing Websites On The Internet Like Cable Television

This is a much different type of video today. I wanted to bring awareness to the topic of Net Neutrality and internet access for the masses. Here is the definition from Wikipedia and for this topic it is probably accurate enough: “Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments regulating most of the Internet must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differentially by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.”

From SaveTheInternet.com to be more specific: “Net Neutrality is the internet’s guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. Net Neutrality means an internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that ISPs should provide us with open networks — and shouldn’t block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn’t decide who you call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn’t interfere with the content you view or post online. Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the internet into fast and slow lanes. An ISP could slow down its competitors’ content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could charge extra fees to the few content companies that could afford to pay for preferential treatment — relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service. This would destroy the open internet.”

What would happen if Net Neutrality is destroyed? In my humble opinion there are many ways to put it. But this one is the easiest for people to understand… We will all pay for internet access like we already do for cable television. That means there would be something like tiers of websites that you would pay to access. Everything not on a specific tier would be blocked or chocked so badly it would be worthless. It would also mean that “Apps” could be blocked, favored and/or chocked out of existence. So the biggest corporations and businesses could probably pay to get onto tiers. Many of these would already be owned by the telecommunications companies controlling the internet and therefore favored. This scenario could cause a lot of problems including killing small online businesses like Catspit Productions.

I’m not affiliated with any agenda or political group. But I do feel internet access as we know it today is very important for the future of our societies for many reasons including but not limited to business, economics, free trade, free information, activist groups, free speech, censorship, and the control or manipulation of news for propaganda type purposes. Our news is already “manufactured” enough. So what happens when we lose the free and open access internet?
