Reclaiming after using water based ink

Here you can discuss any issues related to working with water based screen printing inks. This would include curing, heat setting, mixing colors, additives, brands, usages and much more.

Reclaiming after using water based ink

Post by Jamie3896 »

Hi from the UK, I found you on YouTube and found your videos most helpful, my question relates to water based ink removal from the screen.

I began printing with Speedball fabric inks and had no probs, but when I swapped over to Permaset Aqua ( made by Colormaker Industries in Australia ) it started staining my screen or causing ' ghosting ' do you know of a good method for removing this? Thanks in advance!

Thanks, glad you like my videos and I hope you fully explore the website as well. There is a lot of great information there for you to take advantage of.

If you are referring to de hazing ink stains after removing the emulsion then you need to use a haze remover. The chemical needed to do this is called haze remover or de-hazer. This comes in different types of products. Some are spray-able and others are a paste or gel like and need to be swabbed onto the screen with a brush. Most will need to sit for a few minutes before rinsing out with the pressure washer.

If you are talking about removing some staining in the mesh of a screen with a stencil then you will want to use a water based screen opener to get the stencil clear again for printing:

RhinoClean Green² SO100 Screen Opener

I hope that helps out. Good luck! :D

RECLAIMING A SCREEN:

The same screen can be used many times for different print jobs. Thorough removal of stencil material (inks, etc.) ensures that no residues are left on the screen which could impair subsequent adhesion of the next stencil, and effect future print quality. Follow these steps for reclaiming a screen:.
REMOVING TAPE AND INK

After you have removed all the tape and excess ink from the screen, you will need to clean the ink residues off the stencil. A few examples of different wash-ups are:

Water: For water based inks: following by 2000 Green for any difficult to remove ink remaining especially if it has dried in the screen.
SCREEN STRIP:

This powder mixes with water, in the usual proportion of 100g to 10 litres of water, depending on the water-resistancy of the stencil. Duracoat, Autosol Fast, Autosol Plus Clear, Capillex XR will need a more concentrated solution of perhaps 100g to 5 litres of water.

Procedure:

Apply a small amount to both sides of the screen with a soft brush or cloth. After two to three minutes, the emulsion coating will have dissolved and the mesh can be washed with a strong spray of water.
